What it means and how do you wear it?

Which hand the engagement ring is worn on is not a binding requirement nor the same in all countries. We show what an engagement means in Turkey and the role that the ring plays, and how it is worn. Continue reading: Marriage proposal in Turkey, and Wedding in Turkey.

A significant event

In Germany the marriage ceremony is a romantic occasion that only takes place between two people. It is not celebrated with family and friends. However, in Turkey it is a very different story. In the country that is situated on the Bosporus the proposal for marriage is a long-standing tradition and is often associated with various celebrations and rituals. There is nothing wrong with a modern-day marriage vow in Turkey in the present, and the bride and groom can take their time celebrating the wedding ceremony on their own. But once the marriage proposal has been accepted and accepted, the traditional celebrations begin. The traditional wedding celebrations include the dazzling engagement ring. However some couples are extremely religious and do not wear this piece of jewelry. Of course, there are couples who adhere to the traditional way of life or who take a different view.

Not without the parents

Asking your spouse if she's planning to be married and putting the engagement ring on her ring finger? That is not enough in Turkey. A truly "complete" wedding proposal includes an interview with the bride's parents where the groom-to be asks the parents of his beloved one to accept her hand in marriage with his parents who have already been informed of the wedding planned. If the ceremony is conducted in a very traditional way, even the groom's dad takes on this responsibility.

The small engagement party

The engagement rings can be exchanged if both families are in agreement regarding the marriage. This only happens to couples who don't strictly adhere to the Islamic faith: The bride is not the groom's actual wife until they marry and are still a stranger wearing the ring. Or, like it is often for us, only the bride wears a proposal ring, such as a beautiful solitaire ring. After the exchange of rings, the celebration can begin to celebrate the engagement as sealed. In Turkey other family members are invited to visit of the parents and to the small engagement celebration that follows. The celebration can also be attended by grandparents, aunts, and uncles if the engagement rings have been put on the wrist of the bride (or both partners).

The big engagement celebration

It's time to go big, not small: up 200 guests are not unusual at the Turkish engagement party. Also, in Turkey, people prefer to stick to traditional customs of the past. What shade of dress is she wearing? Who is responsible for the dress? Who pays for the wedding reception? At the time of the celebration, the rings are exchanged in front of everyone present. The most unique thing is that - when both spouses wear a proposal ring - rings that are later to be used as wedding rings are typically used. This is the reason people tend to dig a bit deeper into their pockets when buying engagement rings. There are no additional costs for the wedding rings. After the "official" portion of the wedding ceremony is finished the celebration starts - often extravagantly and late into the evening.

The meaning of the engagement ring and of the ring itself in Turkey

In Turkey as opposed to Germany or the USA and many other western countries, engagement rings have a totally different meaning. In Muslim countries it's a symbol for love and unity between two people without any significance to religion. Based on the degree of faith and the interpretation given to the Koran by the imam, couples might choose to skip rings at the time of their proposal or even for their wedding. This religious custom originates from the belief that when a ring is displayed in plain sight, the couple is imitating those who are not Muslims. For example, if a proposal ring is considered to be a gift from the man, the woman can wear it and flaunt it without hesitation.

The left hand

The question "On which hand will you wear your engagement ring?" has a very simple answer If you are a Turkish couple decides to wear a ring for their proposal it is put on the left ring finger as in Germany. After the wedding, it could be put on the right finger to accompany the wedding ring.

There's no gold for those who believe in God.

When an engagement is planned in Turkey, if the engagement rings are also used as wedding rings, the choice is usually made of jewelry that is not made of gold. Men who belong to the Muslim faith are not permitted to wear any gold jewelry since the precious metal is regarded with luxury and should be avoided. This is the reason that most couples, at least when they are religious, opt for rings that are made of platinum or silver. It's debatable if the latter isn't an even greater level of luxury. If the woman is only wearing the ring, then it can be made of gold in any alloy she chooses. Women are permitted to wear jewelry of all kinds and often.

Beautiful custom

The proposal ring in Turkey is often bought by the family of the groom - then, of course, a hidden vow of marriage between two individuals cannot be made and the religious interpretation must allow the rings to be worn. If you decide to wear rings on both hands, a gorgeous ribbon will be used to link them. This ribbon will be cut during the engagement party. This happens after the exchange of rings when both couples have rings on their fingers. The proposal rings acquire a special meaning that is the intimate bond between a man and woman that is mentally sealed by parents and other guests and relatives invited to the party.

in Conclusion - the engagement ring in Turkey

The ring for the proposal, even though it is not usually worn by all couples, or at the very least by every bride-to-be and bride-to-be, is a cherished custom in Turkey. While strictly religious Muslims generally do not like it, it's a part of many couples and plays an important part in the different engagement celebrations. Wedding rings are typically used as engagement rings and therefore are a good investment. Women can wear gold jewelry however they want, but religious men aren't permitted to wear jewelry. After marriage the ring can be worn on both hands. It can be placed on the left ring finger in the event that the bride wants.
